I just recently watched a talk by Jeff Hammerbacher, the guy who said the infamous "The best minds of my generation are thinking about how to make people click ads": don't get fooled by the title of the talk, it's one of those speeches full of interesting ideas, so that you could spin-off a dozen of other equally interesting talks from it.
I think there is a lot of overlap between what you are saying and what he says about finding meaning in your work, a theme that he calls "Corporations as containers of work for the society".
