#1: Delivery Drones in China: Great piece about the E-commerce revolution in China; the collision of new age technology (here mostly drones) with remote, largely pastoral villages is fascinating. China is an incredibly interesting country.
#2: Internet Rebels: Really interesting story about the ways that the Cuban people have circumvented government control of the internet. Cuba is a time capsule in many ways, but has also developed in parallel; the piece talks about how Cuba has independently uncovered many of the same forces that shaped the early internet.
#3: Inexplicably Bad: As a Bills fan I have a soft spot for underperforming football teams; as always, FiveThirtyEight looks at the Browns less-than-storied history through some very insightful perspectives.
#4: The Music Man: Spotify is a company I’ve always been fascinated by, and so this profile of the company and their founder, in the months leading to the IPO, is awesome. You can see the Scandinavian roots of Spotify in many of the decisions they’ve made, and almost can’t help but root for them.
#5: Technological Evolution: A longer piece, and fairly dense, but well worth it - Dan Wang is an incredibly thorough thinker, and here he made me largely reverse my opinion on manufacturing jobs in the U.S. I used to regard the loss of these industries as “oh well, couldn’t be avoided, and we’re doing better things now anyway”; now I’m much more apprehensive about their disappearance.
