#1 Future of Capitalism: Eric Weinstein speculates on the future of capitalism in his answer to the question, “What do you consider the most interesting recent [scientific] news? What makes it important?” In it he argues that software is automating away ALL routine tasks and away from knowledge in which we know how to use and a “shift in emphasis from jobs to opportunities” that is largely unsupported by any underlying educational model. Are you ready to seize these opportunities?
#2 Suicide: (Warning: Dark): In a powerful and deeply sad suicide note, Will Moore details why he lost the will to live and why he always found it hard to fit in to today’s world.
#3 Lawlessness: Ralph Nader argues that while many think there is strong rule of law in the United States, large parts of society operate in a certain state of lawlessness. His culprits? Corporate power and lawyers
#4 Facebook Ads: The rather boring process behind ads on facebook and how they were used in the 2016 political campaign. It appears that Trump was better than Clinton at the ad game, with Trump’s team, “seeded the Audiences assembly line with content about Clinton that was engaging but dispiriting” to suppress likely Clinton voting. I imagine that both campaigns, headed by 70+ year olds were both not as good as Obama’s team. Can’t wait until Gen-Z is running campaigns!
#5 Travel: Derek Sivers, in this #shortread, argues that moving to new areas will make you “realize that your beliefs were not correct — they were just the quaint local culture of where you grew up.” and that the true magic of moving somewhere new is in commitment - investing in friendships, the community and the culture.
