Boundless #17: 💡Future of Work Mindset Results, Target Income Calculator & "A Learning A Day" From Rohan Rajiv
Mindsets: comparing full-timers, side-giggers and alternative workers
In March, I launched a 27-question assessment that asked people various questions across three main categories: Foundations, How You Create and How You Adapt. With almost 100 responses, here are five takeaways
Entrepreneurs report the highest satisfaction in work and life followed by solopreneurs, then full-timers with side gigs and then full-timers
Alternative workers (entre and solo -preneurs) experience much more autonomy, ownership and judgment in their work and are looking for alternative ways to live, design their lives and learn
The biggest difference between alternative workers and full-time workers was the response to the question "I have the freedom and autonomy to work on things that matter"
The biggest difference between full-time workers and full-time workers with side gigs has to do with uncertainty. "Side-giggers" are 19% more likely to agree with "I am okay not knowing what work I will be doing in two years”
The lowest scores among alternative workers were focused on action, experimentation and focus, and finding community and purpose — challenges for most people, but likely there is more pressure to focus on these in self-employment without a clear definition of success.

Solopreneur Shift Digital Learning Experience/Experiment
Alternative workers and full-time workers are more likely to agree with this statement
"I am increasingly looking for alternative ways to develop skills outside of traditional educational institutions"
More and more options outside of Academia are popping up. Seth Godin has his altMBA which is a 30 day alternative for $147,000 less than an MBA. Lambda school is offering free tuition to help you learn how to code and don't worry about paying them back unless you land a good job. My friend Jeff is bringing people to Guatemala for hands-on learning projects as part of his CareerX accelerator.
I have been doing a lot of 1-on-1 coaching over the last year of people who want to carve a different path and I have pulled these materials together as part of a four-week digital learning experience I am launching in July. This will be community-driven, hands-on and aim to help people who are curious about becoming self-employed, want to take their solo journey to the next level or even full-timers who want to change their mindset of how they think about work.

Tools! - WTF Do I Need To Make?
Over the last couple of weeks, I developed a "Freelance Target Income Calculator" that factors in self-employment taxes and taxes by State. I reverse engineered the taxes to determine estimated tax ranges for the post-tax income, which took a bit of excel Ninja work. This should help you get a rough estimate for the question "wtf do I need to make to afford this life?" Please share widely!

BoundlessPod - Rohan Rajiv on learning through 3500+ daily blog posts, writing and parenting
I met Rohan for the first time at a company retreat in Switzerland. We were having an interesting conversation at dinner and he leaned over to me and asked: “can I send you an e-mail of something I learn every day?” This was the first opt-in newsletter I had ever joined in person. Six years later, Rohan has continued his practice and had shared ten years of A Learning A Day. Rohan shares his perspective on how he thinks about writing, how he continues to learn and what he has learned from becoming a parent. We also dive into his perspectives on work and technology, something he explores through his long-form writing at Notes By Ada. Rohan is a delight, I hope you enjoy our conversation.

Support Boundless Through Micro-Donation
Since going out on my own, I have been averse to the idea of "building a business" and "monetizing" my work. I am driven by helping others and try to devote my energy to being generous and creative - wherever that takes me. When I create tools like the Freelance Target Income Calculator, I want to get it into as many hands as possible.
I have embraced Patreon as an experiment for people to support me in continuing to do this work. Think about it as Kickstarter for creators, but focused on supporting one's life.
If you want to offer a gift of $1 a month, I will blast your name at the top of the next e-mail!
