Boundless #15 | Don't promote people & interview with Stephen Warley, the "professor emeritus" of the future of work
Crisis At Work Audio
This is a new experiment - so please yell at me if it doesn't work. Last fall, I published a six-part report slash essay about the "crisis at work" that was the most read thing I've ever written. Yet, many people do not read long articles.
I have been drawn more to audio as you can go on about your life while listening to it rather than being drawn into clickbait heaven aka the internet. So I recorded a 30-minute podcast where I go through the six key themes from the essay:
Defaulting to the wrong goals (shareholder value)
Mistaking authority for performance (the Tom Brady principle)
A lack of connection to purpose
Chaos theory explains organization more than consulting firms
We don't actually want to give people autonomy
Individuals often still choose comfort over growth (and it makes sense why they do)
I released this to my amazing Patreon supporters already. If you are interested in listening (more to come), you can access it for as little as $1 a month or more if you are feeling generous. This will help support the podcast and other things I create to give away to as many people as possible.
The Tom Brady Principle?
In "crisis at work" I called attention to the one-dimensional thinking around success. To be paid more and rewarded and looked at with respect in society, you must be promoted to a higher position. While this works in some industries, in many where the creative work are what is most important to customers, it might be insanity.
It would have been insane for Robert Kraft to promote Tom Brady to general manager after a super bowl win, but in the corporate world we call this talent management.

BoundlessPod - Stephen Warley, Professor Emeritus of the freelance economy
“Work as you know it is currently changing in fundamental ways that we have not seen since the industrial revolution”
Stephen has been self-employed for more than 18 years. At first, it was by accident. He referred to himself as a “reluctant freelancer.” We talk about how that mindset evolved into one where he now sees self-employment as THE option for today’s world. He is the founder of Life Skills That Matter, a platform, and community to help people to build the real skills they need to build a life they are proud of.
